FTM 2009 Resolution [coming soon]
|
|
1
|
FTM 2008 changes, adds, and/or deletes data recorded in FTM v16 GEDCOMs. Names are changed and data is lost in the process! This problem stands alone as the main reason not to buy FTM 2008 - DATA WILL BE LOST
EXAMPLE
|
SP3 resolves this problem.

FTM 2008 SP3v2, and possibly previous versions of FTM 2008, fails to import some dates properly recorded in FTM v16 GEDCOMs. The date data is listed as an import error and logged in the Tasks page as "High Priority" from which the dates could be manually restored. This problem was not observed with my small 2.5k person file but was in my 90.9k person file I tried after loading SP3v2 and again after loading SP3v3 hoping processing speed would be improved - FTM 2008 processing of GEDCOM speed has not been improved.
SP3v3 is slower and more dates are lost - 111 as compared to 23 in SP3v2! See Problem 3.
EXAMPLE

SP3 resolves date problem - but not the processing time problem.

|

|
FTM 2008 creates an enormous amount of SPELLING ERRORS IN EVERY GENERAL NOTE when opening GEDCOMS to start an FTM 2008 file.

|
FTM 2008 processing time is too long - especially considering example #1's small number of entries - all files have no media!
Sadly, FTM 2008 SP3 v17.0.0.965 (Public) has not overcome the unacceptably slow processing speed.
EXAMPLE #1
Compares opening time of a large FTM v16 (90.9K person) .ftw file to a small FTM 2008 (2.5k persons) .ftm file
EXAMPLE #2
Display of computer's marginally acceptable resources required to convert a 90.9k person GEDCOM file to an FTM 2008 SP3v2 or SP3v3 large file.
Processing time remains unacceptably slow:
one hour, 10 minutes, 40 seconds with SP3v2
one hour, 15 minutes, 24 seconds with SP3v3
and now one hour, 15 minutes, 22 seconds with SP3 v17.0.0.965 (Public) - but at least the date problem is resolved.
|
|
SP3v2 and SP3v3 have not resolved processing speed. My 2.5k person GEDCOM file only loaded marginally faster.
|
|
My 90.9k person GEDCOM file continues to take too long to process with SP3 v17.0.0.965. And, many actions take too long to complete, e.g. 2 minutes are required to populate People Index!
|
|
Report scrolling speed and smoothness greatly improved.
|
|
Virtual Earth loading of places should be optional because it remains too slow for every day use.
|
|

|
|
4
|
FTM 2008's program code is not stable when moving through Places from one place to another. Many IE script errors occur as indicated in the shaded locations of the example locations. There were many more experienced! Script errors also occur if using Fire Fox and Safari WEB browsers.

"Automatic Backup" IS NOT AVAILABLE.
|
Automatically backup Family File Normally, FTM v16 saves a copy of your Family File when you exit the program. The backup file has the same name as the original file, but with the extension .FBK. You can use this backup file if your original file is ever lost or damaged. However, since the backup file takes up space on your computer's hard drive, you may want to de-select this option if your computer's hard drive space is limited.

|
"Find and Replace" IS NOT AVAILABLE.
UNBELIEVABLE!
This action now can only be accomplished by performing a simple Notepad Find and Replace in the GEDCOM.
|
The Find and Replace feature allows you to search for all instances of a particular name or phrase and replace it with the text of your choice.
Note: The Find and Replace feature does not include dated fields. If you want to search for dates, use Find Individual (also found in the Edit menu) instead.
From a Family View page, select the Edit menu. Then select Find and Replace. Use the following buttons to decide how you want to treat each word you find:
- Find (field) Enter the text that you want Family Tree Maker to find.
- Find (button) Click after you have entered the text you want found.
- Replace with Enter the text that you want Family Tree Maker to use instead of that which you entered in the Find field.
- Replace all Click if you want Family Tree Maker to replace all instances of your Find text with that entered in the Replace with field. Family Tree Maker will find and replace every instance without further confirmation.
Note: If you are using Find and Replace in a single Note or Text Item, only text in those items will be replaced. If you want to replace text throughout your entire Family File, you must perform the Find and Replace from Family View.
- Match case Select this check box if you want Family Tree Maker to find only text that matches exactly the text entered in the Find field.
- Find whole words only Select this check box if you want Family Tree Maker to find only matching whole words. For example, Find and Replace would not match Billy if you asked only for Bill.
|
|
SP3 resolves this problem and is now, in itself, an improved feature over previous versions.

"Find Individual" IS NOT AVAILABLE.
Also UNBELIEVABLE!
This action now can only partially be accomplished by performing a simple Notepad search in the GEDCOM.
Note that EVERY FACT, e.g. Name, Date, and all other facts are "the type of information" to be searched using all the qualifiers to "to find the closest match".
|
The Find Individual dialog box allows you to search for information anywhere in Family Tree Maker quickly and easily.
To open the Find Individual dialog box:
- Click on the Edit menu.
- Select Find Individual... from the drop-down menu. The Find Individual dialog box will open.
- Use the Search drop-down arrow to select what type of information you are seeking.
- Type the information you seek in the for field.
- Click Find next to find the first closest match. Continue to click Find next to find each subsequent match.

Recorded Individual and Marriage facts ARE NOT AVAILABLE in the right panel of "Family" unless selected with "Customize View". FTM v16 automatically listed all recorded facts. FTM 2008 default setting should be to include all recorded facts as in done in FTM v16. An inordinate amount of time is required to first determine which facts have been recorded and then add them one at a time. An "Add all" option is the minimum resolution - and even then, only populated Facts should be displayed!

|
"Name Errors" IS NOT AVAILABLE.
FTM 2008's automatic name verification does not properly check for possible errors, e.g. more than one "-"; or names incorrectly spelled with some lower case and some upper case letters, e.g. MInor. Apparently, errors are limited to titles and quotes but even then titles are not properly defined - see Problem 20.
|
"Possible misplaced dash in the name". Available with all three types of error checking. FTM v16 has found a name with either two dashes in a row or a dash at the beginning or end of the name.
"The name may contain an illegal character". Available with all three types of error checking. FTM v16 has found a name containing one or more of the following characters: ~ ! @ # $ % ^ & * _ + = | : ; " < / ( ) [ ] { }1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 0.
"Possibly used married instead of maiden name". Available with all three types of error checking. FTM v16 has found a Family View page where the surname for both the Father and the Mother is the same. Even though women usually assume their husbands' last names, most genealogists record women with their maiden (or family) surname instead of their married surname. Using this standard is helpful for tracking maternal lineage and for distinguishing between a man's sisters and spouses.
"The name may have too many or too few capital letters". Available with all three types of error checking. FTM v16 has found a word containing more than one uppercase letter, or it thinks a letter in the name should be in uppercase. Verify the spelling of the name and then switch any extra uppercase letters to lowercase letters, or vice versa. E.g., FTM v16 will notice an error for "john Smith" because the "j" should be in uppercase and for "John SMith" because the "m" should not be in uppercase. FTM v16 understands surnames such as "Mac Donnell," "De Long," and " von Trapp."

"Fastfields" IS NOT AVAILABLE for "Cause of death", "Picture/Object", and "Address". Selecting an address is available in the pop-up of known addresses but is not as fast as a "Fastfields" feature.
|
Fastfields speed up data entry by automatically filling in repetitive data as you type in the Family View fields and elsewhere. Fastfields include Name fields, Individual fact comment/location, Sources, Cause of death, Picture/Object, and Address fields. By default, all Fastfield options are checked, but you may uncheck any that you wish to turn off.

"Age of Child" for error checking
IS NOT AVAILABLE.
|
According to the dates in your Family File, this individual was born before one (or both) of the parents reached age (optional). Verify the birth dates, then make sure you have the correct relationship between the mother and child.
This individual was (based on one year less than optional) years old or younger on the date of his or her marriage. Consult a municipal record for the marriage to ensure that you're using the most reliable source. Also double-check your original source for the marriage date and the birth dates of both spouses.

"Individual or both" for "Family Group Sheet" facts
IS NOT AVAILABLE.
|
If you choose to include Special Sections for Info and Lineage, Facts, Addresses, Medical, Notes, Marriage Facts or Marriage Notes, these appear on separate pages for each individual, following the first, or Standard Page. In addition, if you also check Notes in the Standard Page options, they appear on both the first page, and again on the individual(s) separate page(s).

"Preference Labels" IS NOT AVAILABLE.
|
Select labels that will be used to refer to basic family relationships. For example, you can change Husband and Wife to Father and Mother. Also note that if you select the LDS checkbox, the labels for Husband, Wife, Marriage, and Married revert to defaults.
The Family Group Sheet will also change. In addition, you can use special LDS Ordinance codes even if you do not select this preference. See LDS Ordinance Information for more information.

"Family Facts" IS NOT AVAILABLE.
|
This feature provides a wealth of facts and statistical data about the highlighted individual's surname. Used together with other sources, this information can help with your ongoing research in a variety of ways.
The different types of family facts available are:
- Civil War Service: View the total number of soldiers with the selected surname who fought in the U.S. Civil War, and how many were with the Union and Confederate forces. This feature can also help direct your research by showing the part of the country where your ancestors lived in the period 1860-1865.
- Immigration Year: See a graph that displays the number of immigrants with the selected surname who immigrated to the U.S. during the period 1851-1891. This can give you an idea of which immigration records you should concentrate your research on.
- Life Expectancy: Look at historical data on the average life expectancy for the selected surname in the U.S. for (approximately) the second half of the Twentieth Century. This data was compiled from the Social Security Death Index. These statistics can help focus your research when you have only partial information.
- Name Distribution (UK): Displays a population map of England and Wales compiled from the 1891 census. See how many "Joneses," for example, lived in each county in 1891. This can help you decide where to concentrate your research.
- Name Distribution (US): Displays a population map of the United States compiled from the 1840, 1880, and 1920 U.S. Census records. This can help you identify population and migration patterns to help guide your research.
- Name Meanings: Shows you information on the origin and history of the selected surname. This can suggest particular geographic areas to concentrate on.
- Newspaper Headlines: Reviewing major events that occurred during an ancestor's lifetime can help you appreciate factors that may have shaped their lives.
- Occupations: Based on data from the 1880 U.S. Census, this feature lets you see what people with the selected surname did for a living.
- Place of Origin: Based on New York Passenger Lists for the period 1851 - 1891, this shows you where people with a particular surname lived before coming to the U.S.
- Ports of Departure: Learn about the route your ancestors took when they came to the U.S. Combined with other immigration records, this can help you focus your research.

"Contact other Researchers" IS NOT AVAILABLE.
|
After finding and merging the individual, highlight that individual in either the Family Tree or Pedigree View and click the right side of the Web Search Resources button. Select Contact Other Researchers from the pop-up menu. The "Contact People who submitted a tree for ... " window appears.
Click on the ID of the researcher you want to contact. The "Compose an E-mail" window appears. This window contains sample language that you may consider using, or you can replace it with your own text.
When you're done with your message, you can click Preview to see what your message will look like. Click Send to transmit your message.

"LDS Formats" IS NOT AVAILABLE.
FTM 2008 is limited to optionally displaying certain boxes that indicate if ordinances were performed for Baptism, Endowment, sealing to Spouse The person to whom another person is married., and sealing to Parents. The boxes are displayed in the Information panes of the People Workspace. An empty box indicates that no date has been reported for that ordinance. A filled box indicates that the date has been recorded.
|
This setting is available in the Preferences dialog box. Click the File menu and select Preferences, then select Labels, Titles, and LDS Option.
Check this if you want to add LDS formatting to Reports and use LDS Layout for Family Group Sheets.
Note: When selected, the Family Group Sheet prints in the LDS format and the list of Reports in the Report Format dialog box will include LDS reports. Some options in the Standard Page Options dialog box will be unavailable when the LDS format box is selected.

FTM 2008's "History" feature is much more limited than previous versions because it removes all history on closing and it can only be viewed in "People".
|
To help you save time, FTM v16 lists the last 30 individuals you edited in your Family File so you can quickly jump to a window that features them as the primary individual. To use the Family Tree Maker History feature:
- 1a. From the toolbar, click the History button. A drop-down menu will appear listing the last 30 names you have edited.
- 2a. Click on a name from the drop-down menu. The individual will become the primary individual for whomever you last viewed.
or
- 1b. From the Edit menu, select Go to History. The Go to History dialog box will open, listing the last 30 names you have edited.
- 2b. Select a name from the dialog box, then click the Go to Individual button. The individual will become the primary individual for whomever you last viewed.

"General Field" for "Titles" IS NOT AVAILABLE.
FTM 2008 incorrectly combines titles with suffixes into a "Fact" called "Titles.
"Prefixes" appearer to be ignored. E.g., any written document should have:
Dr. Delores May Miner, DDS
However input that way in FTM 2008 prints in reports, as corrected by FTM 2008's "Auto Fix":
Delores May Minor DDS Title was Dr..
Note the resulting extra period.
|
Most of the original problem was resolved in SP3v1 but a comma is required after name, before title, for proper printing.
A new problem is that Titles now precede given names in the Family View Index.

"Navigate Back" or "Navigate Forward" between views occasionally fails, e.g. when transferring from "Places" by selecting a person associated with "New York", the "Navigate Back" feature, even with the New York fact highlighted, may return to a different location in "Places" - not even the beginning view of places! And, if a fact change is made in "Person", "Navigate Back" previously appeared not to function.
|
This feature is working better but now, SP3 v17.0.0.965 (Public), sometimes "Navigate Back" now only functions IF "Navigate Back" is double clicked.

"Copy Individuals Between Files"
IS NOT AVAILABLE.
|
You may find it more time-efficient to copy names from one family file to another rather than re-typing every single name.
To copy individuals between files:
- Open the source file (the file youre copying from).
- Go to a tree, report, or Family View page containing the individuals you want to copy.
- Click on the individual you want to be the primary individual in the group you are copying.
- Open the People menu and select Copy Selected Individual.
Note: You can also select Copy All Individuals in Ancestor Tree, Copy Individual & All Ancestors, or Copy Individual & All Descendants.
- Open the destination file (the file you're copying into).
- If you are pasting over an individual already in the destination file, then go to a tree, report, or Family View page displaying that individual and click on him or her.
- If you are pasting an entirely new individual into the destination file, then navigate to a Family View page and click in the location that the new individual should occupy. (Note that you cannot paste into empty boxes in trees.)
- Open the People menu and select Paste Individuals.
Several dialog boxes will display to help you merge the individuals being pasted into the destination file.

Source conversion from FTM v16 to FTM 2008 fails, e.g. a date for "Publication facts" is recorded as a "Publisher name, "Source medium" is lost, "Source quality", although it could be converted to a star rating, is mangled with "Source medium" and "Comments" in "Comments" - and then the email address is "camouflaged" or who knows what happened!

Many necessary charts and reports ARE NOT AVAILABLE! Available reports are badly presented and with minimal options. Although there are about eight "new" reports, only two, "Place Usage" and "Media Usage", are decent additions. For some unfathomable reason, many FTM 2008 chart and report names have been changed from what they were in FTM v16 as will be identified in the following problems.
One of the most problem some aspects of the limited reports available is the Rich Text Format (rtf) export feature has been badly damaged. The feature exports data in a table format adding insult to injury for those experienced in the value of genuine rtf formatted documents. A copy & paste effort cannot be accomplished without an inordinate amount of additional effort. Table data must be converted to text - but that cannot easily be accomplished for all the table - or even for all of a table's segment! Each table segment must be converted separately.
The example shows 2 FTM 2008 table segments with the 1st converted to text. The selected areas (blackened) show that all the data of the 2nd line of the converted segment can be copied but only a portion of the 2nd line of the non-converted segment. Two copy actions of the non-converted segment must be performed to acquire all the target text.
EXAMPLE
Note the place spelling errors and "Description" not removed from "Place" - problem slows correcting effort

Standard Pedigree Tree (FTM v16) is the standard tree among genealogists. A basic genealogical tool, the standard pedigree tree shows direct lines of ancestors of an individual, including empty spaces for recording missing individuals. Genealogists often print out standard pedigree charts to take with them while researching.
Ancestor Tree (FTM v16) Sometimes called "pedigree tree", comes in three shapes, Standard, Fan, and Vertical: Displays direct line ancestors of an individual. For example, if you created an Ancestor tree with you as the primary individual, it would show your two parents, four grandparents, eight great-grandparents, and so forth. This chart uses boxes rather than the plain lines of the standard pedigree tree, and is meant for more personalization.

Outline Descendant trees show where everyone fits in the family. Starting with a relative in the distant past, an Outline Descendant tree moves to the present, showing the primary individual's children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and so on, generation by generation. The difference between a Descendant tree and an Outline Descendant tree is that Outline Descendant trees don't use boxes to display each individual's information. Instead, the information is displayed in outline format, with each individual on a separate line.
When you choose the Outline Descendant Tree view, you can also create an Outline Direct Descendant tree. This type of tree shows the direct lineage from one individual to another. Siblings can be included, but sibling's spouses, cousins, and others who aren't direct descendants cannot. To choose between Descendant and Direct Descendant trees:
- From the Contents menu, select Individuals to Include (ALT, C, N). (You must first be in either the Descendant tree view, the Outline Descendant tree view, or the Descendant Fan tree view.)
- Choose which individuals you want in the tree.
All descendants If you want to create a regular Descendant, Outline Descendant, or Descendant Fan tree, select this option button and click OK. Skip the remaining steps.
Direct Descendants from ... to If you want to create a Direct Descendant tree, Outline Direct Descendant tree, or Direct Descendant Fan tree, select this option button.
Include siblings of direct descendants Select this check box if you would like to include each individual's brothers and sisters in an Outline Descendant tree or Outline Direct Descendant tree.
- Click Change secondary individual.
- Select the name of the individual that you want at the bottom of your tree (the secondary individual) and click OK.

Books IS MISSING unless you agree to send a GEDCOM to Ancestry.com and allow them to use your data anyway they want. This is a portion of what you must first agree to before even trying to publish a "Book" in FTM 2008:
By submitting your GEDCOM file to Ancestry.com, you agree to the following:
- Ancestry may reproduce, compile, and distribute, all information about non-living individuals in your submitted GEDCOM file.
- Ancestry will make reasonable efforts to hide all information about living individuals (except the surname) prior to reproducing, compiling, and distributing your submitted GEDCOM file. If a date of death is not included on any particular record, we will use a process which in our belief excludes the living.
- Ancestry may display your name, email address, and/or Ancestry username, to other family history enthusiasts who may wish to contact you.

You can create a professional-looking book to share with others by selecting trees, reports, and more from the Available Items list on the left column of the Book window, and moving them to the Outline for column on the right column of the book window (either by clicking and dragging, or by using the Add> button, which is discussed in more detail in the links below). The book will be saved to a PDF format, which means that others will be able to view and print the book on their personal computers even if they don't own or use the Family Tree Maker program.

FTM v16 automatically questioned entering name and associated facts duplicating an existing name. FTM 2008 does not - not even if every detail is correct. Many times, when entering a new line or family, a new spouse with multiple marriages, is an additional spouse to an exiting person and would go unattached in FTM 2008.

While testing SP3's "enhanced" merge feature with a 2,456 person, 868 family, FTM 2008 .ftm file as the "Host" and the same FTM v16 GEDCOM that created the FTM 2008 host file as the "Import" file (no changes in either file so all data is identical), the merge INCREASED persons to 3,085 and families to 1003!
For SP3v2 the TGN programmers "tweaked" the threshold logarithms to improve matching. Sadly, no threshold setting, from the default 200 to the 1,000 IDENTICAL matched all identical records.
Now "Flagged" individuals (questionable matches) were 2, 3, 2 respectfully for Threshold settings of 1,000, 499 and 200 while "NEW" individuals were added 475, 37, and 44 times for the same threshold settings - note the inconsistency in the new individuals at 499 and 200 thresholds.
This problem is very serious. Is data lost from the original GEDCOM when the FTM 2008 file was produced resulting in that same lost data now being identified as "new", in whole or part, during the merge creating flagged and added persons?

Many source problems were corrected in SP3 but now any file with an email has its "@" replaced with "@@" and any URL has @@ prefixed before the "http".

A unique resolution - FTM v16 causes the problem - SP3's new "Search and replace" can correct it with carefully planned action.

What charts, even with lacking features, exist in FTM 2008 are enhanced in SP3 with "Save settings" and "Use saved settings". However, the even more widely used "Report" did not receive the same feature enhancement.

Reports can be exported to Rich Text Format (RTF) in SP3v3 but portions, e.g. children and their spouses, are embedded in a table with gridlines. The preparer data is smiliarly affected. The gridlines can only be removed after export using an option to convert table to text.
